So I kind of disappeared from the Internet for awhile, huh? I moved in with Nick and Sarah last weekend, and I was supposed to get Cable/Internet/Telephone set up on Wednesday. But then my grandfather passed away, so I was up west with my family on Wednesday and Thursday. He was nearly 98, and he had been in the hospital for awhile, so we were expecting it. He's had a full life, but it was sad to see him go.
Now it's Monday, and the cable guy is supposed to come sometime today. It's an "all day appointment," which is really annoying. I'm a little nervous about how it's going to go, because I have this homemade-type cable jack in my room. Basically a cable hanging out of the wall that has been spliced with this splitter contraption. Surely he can fix it. I just hope the cost of any new splitters (because I'll need 3 connections all in my room) are included in the installation cost.
So what have I been up to? Well, not a whole lot. School is off to a fairly slow start. I've mostly just had reading to do, though now I have 2 assignments due in the not too distant future. One involves database design, and shouldn't be too difficult. It's using the Entity-Relationship Model, so it's not even at a practical level. The last question on the assignment, however, requires that we describe some data that we'd like to work with for the whole semester. Eventually we will set up a real database based on the design, so we are advised to pick something we are interested in. I think I will do something involving the recording industry. It has lots of concepts to model, like Artists, Songs, Labels, Albums, Singles, etc. The other assignment is for my operating systems course. It involves doing some C programming, so it will be good to see how much I remember. We're going to be creating a simple shell for UNIX systems. A shell in the Windows world is basically equivalent to the MS-DOS command prompt. That may sound quite complicated, but believe me, our shell is going to be very, VERY simple. Plus, the assignment question is actually a lab exercise from the book, so a lot of the code is given.
On the weekend I saw a couple movies with my friend Joe and also went to the ARC dance on Saturday night. On Friday, Joe and I and his friend Conor saw Underworld. It was pretty good. Vampires and werewolves aren't usually my thing, so that says a lot, I think. Then on Sunday, Joe and I saw Mambo Italiano. We both enjoyed it a lot. It's about a gay Italian boy coming out to his family. It's a Canadian movie, and knowing that may have biased me towards enjoying it whether it was good or not. But it actually was really good. I'm going to be encouraging all of my boys to go see it. (Probably once I get back on MSN Messenger.)
The dance on Saturday was kind of depressing. Got to see some old friends again, but the turn out was actually very low. It's like everyone is just picking up and leaving. It makes me want to do the same as soon as I graduate. But I've only been here 3 weeks, so I have to give it a bit of a chance. Maybe Colours next Saturday will be better. I sure hope so. Because there is even a rumour going around that the dance on Saturday may have been the last ARC dance.
I haven't been using the phone much since I've been sharing, and not at all for long distance. But that will change as soon as I get mine set up. So expect to receive a mass e-mail with my new contact info, and/or a personal phone call. Woo hoo! Imagine that!
Hmm, guess I should get started on that assignment, or maybe tidy up a bit more for the cable guy. *bowm-chicka-bowm* ;)
[NOTE: Both install guys (one for cable/telephone, and one for net) were old and yucky. Fun times.]
